“Rejoice in your work; never lose sight of the nursing leader you are now and the nursing leader you will become” (para. 17), states Dr. Sue Fitzsimons (2013) during her commencement address at a Yale University Graduate Nursing Programs ceremony. In order to grow into a great and successful leader, one must examine their strengths and weaknesses and be open to continually build upon their strengths as well as improve and develop their areas of weakness (MindTools.com, 2016).
The Nurse Manger Leadership Partnership’s (NMLP, 2008) Nurse Manager Skills Inventory is one tool to assist leaders to evaluate their strengths and areas that need further development. I hold myself accountable in both my personal and professional life in multiple ways. First, I am advancing my education by working towards completing the baccalaureate degree of science in nursing (BSN). Second, I keep up with the latest evidenced-based practices; and advancements in healthcare and technology through continuing education. Additionally, I ensure my personal life and professional practice are in alignment with the latest nurses’ code of ethics and scope and standards of practice (American Nurses Association [ANA], 2015a; ANA, 2015b). Despite being a critical care nurse for over ten years I have neglected to obtain the American Associations of Critical Care Nurses’ (AACN) certification for adult critical care nurses (CCRN), which, in addition to the BSN, I noted in prior self-assessments and am taking steps to obtain. I am also a member in multiple associations, including AACN, ANA, and American Association of Holistic Nursing, which helps me network with other members as well as take continuing education courses they
