In the play, Romeo and Juliet the Nurse plays a key role. Although we don’t know her real name, that doesn’t make her any less significant than other characters. Throughout the story, we have seen her being loving and protective over Juliet because she is a mother figure to her. Not only that, but we have also seen her lighten the mood with her comedic attitude. The Nurse has a very close relationship with Juliet (even closer than Juliet has with her own mother). When Lady Capulet is unsure of her daughters age a the Nurse jumps in to inform Lady Capulet that “Come Lammas Eve at night shall she be fourteen” (1.2.18). Some background on that excerpt is that the Nurse, Juliet, and Lady Capulet were about to talk about Juliet getting married …show more content…
“My lord and you were then at Mantua-/Nay, I do bear a brain” (1.3.29-30) the Nurse starts to tell a story about when her and her husband were watching Juliet. She can feel the mood starting to tense because Lady Capulet is talking about Juliet getting married to Paris. During this she also mentions her dead husband and daughter which explains why the Nurse is so protective over Juliet because she is the daughter that the Nurse didn't get to keep. In the story she talks about the joke that the Nurse’s husband told when Juliet fell on her stomach. She does this several times throughout the play, but this is the most significant one to me because during it. The Nurse is a key character in the play Romeo and Juliet. She changes what she believes throughout the story about the marriage of Romeo and Juliet. She is also a very protective person to Juliet, because she is more of a mom to Juliet than Lady Capulet is. The Nurse is not the only character in the play Romeo and Juliet who has many traits that help develop the plot of the story, but I think that she helps in many ways to initiate the result of this

Shakespeare created the Nurse as the only accepting character; who is willing to go to great extents just to allow Romeo and Juliet be happily together because of her neutral and unbiased persona in the story. When Juliet had sent the nurse to get word from Romeo on marriage, she talks to Romeo to make sure he is a kind boy with no ugly desires. Shakespeare writes Romeo’s promise, “ I protest unto thee-” (2.4.175), to show how he has no ill intentions, which the nurse acceptingly responds with, “Good heart, and i’ faith I will tell her as much” (2.4.177). Here, the nurse doesn’t even consider that Romeo is the son of the Montagues, the Capulets’ greatest enemy. She gives her consent after knowing he is a good man.…
