The Nsli-Y Program

Decent Essays
I am interested in the NSLI-Y program because It would be amazing opportunity to learn a new language and culture, and help with a career later in life. I am open to trying and learning new things as well as meeting new people if I am selected.
I would also be able to share my experience with others after I return home. Living outside the United States is good because it helps people understand other cultures. We learned about ethnocentrism in social studies and I think things would change for the better if people were exposed to different places and ideas. Studying abroad is a good way to learn how to respect the beliefs and cultures of other people in different countries.

What does it truly mean to be intellectual? Some may say that being intellectual means being book smart, while others say that it is being street smart. In an entry of “Hidden Intellectualism” by Gerald Graff, Graff believes that one can actually become intellectual if they start learning about topics they actually enjoy and then slowly start easing into challenging topics. While many argue that intellectualism is limited to the studies of school, non-academic activities such as traveling and truly experiencing these events can teach one about the history of a place, the culture, and how to solve problems. When asked why people decide travel they just say that they travel for vacation, but what they do not realize is that traveling is a learning experience.…

I will never forget the day that my parents told me we were moving to Colorado. I had a wide range of emotions towards this, I was both nervous and excited. I can explain it best as the moment before the fall on a roller coaster, the butterflies building up in your stomach as the bottom of the hill is not insight but the ride down is sure to be amazing. Much like roller coasters new experiences have no true end in sight but the journey along the way with all the twists and turns are sure to change you as a person. New experiences like moving help you grow as a person, because you are introduced to so many new things like being surrounded by new people who have many different viewpoints, to being in a new atmosphere with so many new opportunities all of which shape you as a person and they also present a great deal of life lessons.…

Where should we live in America? In a small state or in the big state? This question is really hard to get the accurate answer because it depends on what you need for your life in the future. Coming to the United States was and continues to be a blessing within itself. I constantly find myself in a nostalgic state whenever I recall the times where in tragedy, where my friends and family would refer to the United States as the promise land. This for them was Israel, a place where freedom reigned and there was a constant promise of a better life. When my mother and I came to the United States, I was just a little girl who was embarrassed to speak English and had been uprooted from the only home I ever knew. I was unaware of any form of oppression, oblivious to different nationalities and ethnicities other than the ones I had seen which were Indian and Islam.…

Coming from an Indian background but growing up in America, I had the advantage of gaining knowledge about two very different societies. Where doing a certain thing might be right in American culture but doing that same thing in India might be considered a taboo. Every part of the world has its own rituals and doings. Since everyone has their own different perceptive towards looking at things no one should judge them without knowing why they do what they do. Growing up, a lot of happenings changed my thinking and how I view the world now.…

I was diagnosed with Bipolar disorder type I when I was 14, after being treated for Clinical depression for over a year. It made so much sense, and it was a relief, but it was also scary and overwhelming. Another year later, I have learnt to accept it, am functioning well, and am succeeding at school and at my work as a pharmacy assistant. I love the place I live as well; I love the way I can hear waves crashing as I fall asleep, and how the sunset looks from my balcony at night. I love how the bakery is a 5 minute walk from my house, and how the beach is less than a minute.…

My two majors, history and Spanish, are my two academic passions. While history bores many, to me it represents a world filled with revolutions, dictators, riots, powerful leaders, and corrupt individuals. For this reason, I am drawn to Latin American history—one filled with conflict, unrest, powerful social movements and powerful people. I am especially drawn to Chile’s history due to the controversy of American interventionism there and the dark history of General Pinochet. Learning Chilean history at Chilean universities will help me grow as an academic because I will be able to see Chile’s history from a different perspective, void of the tint of American exceptionalism often evident in text books; visit the historical sights that I learn about; experience Chilean culture in a way that deepens…
