The NSC-68 was the source of the escalation of the Cold War and the US Patriot Act provides increased security and guarantees freedom without compromising privacy for the American Public. Both were significant because they were written to secure the home front.
In 1947 Congress passed the National Security Act which established a Department of Defense over three separate services. These services were the army, the navy, and the new air force. The act also created the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) to coordinate the intelligence gathering activities of various government agencies. Several weeks after the September 11 attack, the Bush Administration put forth an act to help protect and ensure the U.S. from attacks. The major purpose of the Patriot Act is to break down the walls of regulatory and legal policies existing between the law enforcement agencies and intelligence to share essential, related information. The United States of America is a country that is based upon a principle of balancing the rights of an individual, while still protecting public order. Many Americans feel as though the Patriot Act interferes with our 1st and 4th amendments; which are the right to free speech and expression, as well as protecting the citizens of unwarranted search and seizures. The authority given to the government to violate individual privacy crosses the boundaries set in the Constitution. The U.S. Constitution (specifically the Bill of Rights) guarantees every American certain Individual rights. Several critics have claimed that the United States of America no longer protects these rights.
