The November Afternoon Analysis

When looking at coming to the conclusion of whether or not we like an art piece, one needs to question why. Art can be good, or bad, and their are many characteristics that can help determine whether or not it is good or not. Although the visual aspect is important, the difference in the artist can make just as big of a difference. Artists who are worldly renown are given more credit toward their work, or at least more positive critiques. Looking at the artwork of Grant Wood, two pieces stand out to me. December Afternoon stands out to me in terms of being successful and CORN stood out as the unsuccessful piece. These pieces stand out to me because of how they look, and the elements and principles of design they show. Art is the expression or application of human creative skill and imagination. I believe art goes beyond that, including having an appealing aesthetic and putting time and work into their art piece. When looking briefly at the art, it is very apparent how much contrast is in the piece. The high contrast draws the attention of the viewer, almost forcing them to look closer at the art. While looking closer at this piece, the details become more prevalent. Using shadows and perception Grant Wood is able to make a depth affect that makes the viewer feel more engaged into the image. After looking at what just the appearance has to offer it is smart to learn more about it. December Afternoon was made in 1941, the description for this particular piece is interesting because their is no straight forward answer of what everything symbolizes.
