Bam! Just like that two American families are at war, leaving men, women, and children dead. Many Historians say that the conflict was caused by one family fighting for the Confederate South and the other family fighting for the Union North. However, some theorists believe the conflict started over a single pig. The Hatfield’s and McCoy’s are two Appalachian Mountaineer families. The families have lived on opposite sides of the stream Hatfield’s lives in Logan county West Virginia, the McCoy’s lived in pike county Kentucky. The McCoy’s had 16 kids and were headed by Randl/ Randolph McCoy. Hatfield’s had 13 kids and were headed by William Anderson Hatfield or Devil Anse. Because of the savage act by Frank the McCoy’s and Perry actually got scared of him. After all the Grapevine creek drama there was later some dispute about the Hatfield’s that were captured in West Virginia, but were going to get put on trial in Kentucky. The two governors agreed to have the 9 Hatfield’s tried in Kentucky and sent them to Louisville. The case soon caught the attention of the supreme court and was later taken over by the supreme court. The verdict found all of the men guilty and sentenced to life in prison and one was sentenced to death. Ellison Cotton Top Mounce a cousin to the Hatfield’s was the deciding factor for the men that got sentenced to life in prison, he was considered to be slow or impaired and confessed and gave his whole statement on the execution of the McCoy boys and on the New Years day Massacre. Ellison was later hung, but was actually the most innocent out of the other 9 men. Ellison Mounts was the last death between the two families and after he was hung everything between the families all but stopped. Chauncey Hatfield
