As Noah finished reading the final letter Allie wrote to him, he felt a great desire to be with her. He slowly rose from his desk chair and glanced into the hallway where he saw Janice sitting stolidly on her chair at the front desk. Janice was a rule follower, being that her husband was a lawyer, and she would never allow for anyone rebel against them. Noah debated his options: he could either wait and see if she would leave, which could potentially never happen, or he could try and sneak past her like a cheetah or a mouse. Noah could not wait any longer, and decided to take his chances. Janice noticed Noah virtually instantly and questioned his motives for being out past curfew. Janice was aware of Noah’s daily routine and mindful of him and Allie’s situation. She sympathizes Noah and says, “I try to think of what it’s like for you, but I can’t even imagine it. I don’t know how you do it. You even beat her disease sometimes. Even though the doctors don’t understand it, we nurses do. It’s love, it’s as simple as that. It’s the most incredible thing I’ve ever seen” (Sparks 203). Janice tells Noah that it is against the rules to sneak into her room, but that she would be going downstairs to refill her coffee. Janice left the front desk, where there sat a full cup of steaming coffee. Noah smiled and made his way to Allie’s bedroom.
