Essay On Nonverbal Norm

The non-verbal norm that I decided to break was; invading a persons personal space. The person I decided to use in this experiment was my friend Annabel, the same person that I talked about in the first assignment. Even though we are close friends we do not have much contact, no hugs or anything. Therefore our personal boundaries are the same as any other set of people: six inches to a foot. Even though we are around each other a lot I decided the best time to break this non-verbal social normality was while in a sauna. This is because there in no better place to invade a persons personal space then in a room where the minimum temperature is 125 degrees and while you both are covered in sweat. To begin, I sat the normal distance which is …show more content…
I should also mention at this point I also created space between us, to make the area more comfortable for the both of us. After explaining to her what I was doing, I asked Annabel questions regarding how she felt during the duration of my experiment in which I had to break a non-verbal norm. Annabel stated that when I first moved closer to her in the beginning, she was confused and thought that maybe there was just something wrong with the area I was sitting in and that was the reason that I was moving closer. She realized that was not the reason though when I continued to inch my way closer to her, which was the reason that she started to move away from me. I then asked her about her lack of response when I blatantly ignored her when she asked me what I was doing. Annabel then informed me that it is not unusual for me to ignore what she says and at this point she kinda just expects it. When she said this it made me realize that maybe I do not listen to people all of the time and maybe I break that normality without even thinking about it. Which could also be the reason why, when I tried an experiment with my mom that involved me not responding or looking at her when she talked, did not work at

The three specific rules or norms that were present in the clip from Penelope that guided the nonverbal communication were facial messages, proximity, and eye contact. Facial messages where shown throughout the movie. The shock and terror that is shown on other people’s face when seeing Penelope for the first time speaks volumes about their feelings. Violating Social Norms (or: The Most Uncomfortable Elevator Ride of My Life) Upon completing this assignment, I have come to the conclusion that trying to violate a social norm on purpose is actually difficult and takes calculation, whereas accidentally doing it is so much easier. I chose to model my violation of a social norm off of the famous elevator groupthink experiment from the 1960s that has to do with conformity and ‘peer pressure’. I use to do this when I was a kid with my friends at the mall. We would have a high success rate, partly because there were about six of us.…

To complete the social norm experiment, I went to the mall. I stared at people in different areas of the mall until I got a reaction from them. Sometimes I sat down at their table and others I just stood in front of them. The social norm that I violated was continuous eye contact without turning or looking at something else, which is not normal for people to do.…

In many different societies we all contain social norms. Fundamentally, social norms are defined as “the rules of behavior that are considered acceptable in a group or society” (YourDictionary). In other words, norms are the written or unwritten rules of behavior that we follow in everyday life. Some norms could be an effortless gesture such as “holding a door for an individual”. But other social norms are more strictly held to in certain situations than in others; for instance, slapping a stranger can lead to bad altercations other than dealing with the cops (if some would say).…

During my first semester in LBCC I had a night class. I would get off around 9:50 or sometimes we would get out a few minutes early. I had to wait for a bus to take me to the metro and from the blue line take the green line. I always had my earphones on and was always aware of my surroundings. It got dark fast and there were a few times where the thought “maybe I’m being watched because some of these faces look familiar and I’m not as aware as I should be” would pop in my head.…

My three violations of social norms are wearing my jacket backwards at school, eat soup with a fork at home and say goodbye everytime I answer a phone call. My hypothesis is people will think the way of acting these things are strange and confusing, they might also feel like I am an odd person. In the case of wearing my jacket backwards, some people will tell me this mistake I made but some people will assume I am just being unusual. For eating soup with a fork, I think my parent or my brother will give me a spoon and they think I am so silly of using a fork. Saying goodbye everytime…
