The Night That Changed My Life I raised my window shade to reveal a magnificent view from above. I observed the multi-lane highway occupied with several vehicles traveling in each direction and broad trees covered in snow, to the mysterious stagnant ocean scattered with icebergs. It was winter break in New England and my family and I were en route towards Miami, where an immense cruise ship, the Allure of the Seas, was waiting for us. I was ecstatic for the adventure my family and I were embarking on. We arrived at the Port of Miami after approximately six-hours of traveling, not to mention jam-packing our luggage full of every outfit imaginable. Later that night, I woke up and found myself disoriented in a dark, enigmatic room with strangers surrounding me that I had never seen before. My mind dazed at the sound of voices that were foreign to me. In the wake of what seemed like a disastrous crisis, has inspired a young adolescent girl to take care of herself.
After boarding the ship, we roamed the ship briefly and shortly after ate dinner in a casual dining room called the “Windjammer Cafe”. After dinner my

I powered on my laptop and scanned the internet for various causes. A few facts that I came across were that it occurs to one to fifteen percent of the general population, causes little to no memory of the event, and sleep deprivation is a factor. The last one stood out to me. On the night of the trip, I packed until midnight and slept for a few hours before leaving for the airport. I was certainly sleep deprived and didn’t nap on the plane. In retrospect, I was so blessed to have a harmless experience. The circumstances could have been much more terrible. This event has led me to understand the great importance of sleep. It has inspired me to live a healthier life, including catching those zzz’s each night as it is a necessity for my

Something in me has always known that I was not typical. In this generation, the typical person would graduate high school and then go on to pursue a two to four year college degree. Up until a few months ago, that was what I thought I was going to do. I thought that I was going to go to a private college somewhere, major in law, come out to be a defense attorney, and spend my days and nights hauled up in a courtroom somewhere. I believed that that was going to be my reality not because I wanted it to be but because I thought it had to be.…

“Miami isn’t too far; it is ninety-five miles away at the most…” Maya’s cherubic features made it hard to fabricate an excuse for wanting to stay in Cuba. I knew that staying here, staying in poverty, predisposed me to a life of misery and malnourishment. The journey would be perilous, which made me wonder if it was worth it. I longed to voice my dissent and convince her to condone the actions of the corrupt government, however I knew the time to liberate had come. My patience for living life as nothing more than a pitiful pauper, salvaging and pilfering for my next meal was beyond exhausted.…

We can all admit that at some point in our crazy and busy life, we have taken the time to look back and ponder on our childhood, our childhood dreams, the endless things we could do and not get punished for it, and the constant need to seek for adventure. But as an adult looking back, we don’t stop here, we continue to ponder and think about the importance of this event, the safety, and the ability to be able to accomplish it at such a young age. This passage from Sarah Orne Jewett’s “A White Heron,” takes us back down to memory lane and uses Sylvia’s climb to the top of the monumental pine tree to see the ocean as a metaphorical image to us, as adults, being able to achieve our wildest dreams for the future. This passage perfectly displays the danger, excitement and the “I did it” feeling by using a distinct narrative pace, a third person omniscient point of view, denoting diction, and imagery.…

It was a Tuesday, on September 22nd, 2015, I claimed my seat by the window of a Southwest plane, and leaned down to shove my large purple bag below my seat. I had put my headphones over my ears to escape the noises of the world around me. I turned my head to my dad and brother Taylor, they were adjusting to get comfortable, and then I rotated the opposite way to stare out the tiny window. It was a sunny afternoon, I was already thrilled to get out of high school, and to go to Florida was even better! I haven’t been to Florida in over 7 years and before that my family used to go every year.…

This death enraged the Nazi Party officials who encouraged the violence by giving instructions to local officials. This lead to social expectations of the war. People, especially German soldiers were under the impression this event was not wrong and believed anything that came to them from their commanders. Some of the instructions given to local officials included making sure that non-jewish people and property was protected and not affected by the violence.…
