Imagine you are asleep in your warm bed at two in the morning when you hear a window break downstairs. Your first thought is your children and their safety. Before leaving your bedroom, you grab your gun. You walk down the hall and tell your children to get under their beds. As you go down stairs and peek around the corner, you see a man holding a knife, stealing your television and other valuables. You know that in a few minutes he will be coming up stairs and you and your family will be in danger. You run back upstairs and call 911 but realize that they probably won’t be there in time. As you go back down the hall, you see the criminal at the top of the stairs. You both stop and stare at each other for a few seconds and he looks into your children’s bedroom and starts to move toward you holding his knife in front of him. You pull out your gun and tell him to get out of your house. He starts to charge at you and all you can do is shoot him. As the police show up a few minutes later, you realize that without your gun, you and your family could have been killed.
Many people believe that guns are a safety hazard in our society and that they do more harm than good, but many statistics show otherwise. Guns are used for protection throughout many households in America. The right to carry a gun has been a fundamental part of this country since the 1700’s. In fact, according to the U.S. Constitution, “the right of the people to keep and bear Arms” is a personal liberty. Over the…
