August 13th, 2013. Something that I never thought would happen to me, happened. One of my best friends, Devin Umbaugh, was in a car accident. He was with one of his friends from Adel, and they were driving around on a gravel road. He was driving recklessly around a sharp turn, and the car rolled. He wasn’t wearing a seat belt so he got thrown from the car. It ended up landing on him. He was still alive when the ambulance came, and when they took the car off him, he immediately went unconscious, he was then taken to the Methodist Hospital in Des Moines. The night of the accident, I was at my friend’s house. We were asleep, then all the sudden I wake up to the sound of my phone ringing. It was Jalyn Clark, a girl I used to be friends with. I answered the phone and she told me about the accident. My stomach dropped, and my head was spinning, I was in shock. I didn’t have any reaction because in my head, I didn’t want to believe it. I just sat on the bed for 20 minutes then I woke up my friend, Bailey, and told her what happened. When I started saying it out loud, it became real. I broke down into tears telling her. I had to go home. I ran out of the house and drove home, I’m lucky I didn’t wreck on my way home because I could barely see I was crying so hard. All I could think about was Devin and I’s relationship. He was my best guy friend. He was one, of very few, that understood me. No matter what it was, I would vent to him about everything and he would vent to me. We…
