The Three Types Of Friendship In The Nicomachean Ethics By Aristotle

Many people have a lot of people that they are close to and consider them friends. Many of these friends to Aristotle are not real or at least do not have good intensions they just benefit from the friendship and this happens both way in the friendship. In “The Nicomachean Ethics” by Aristotle explains three types of friendships that occurring to him exist. He also says what type of people should be friend based on the category that they go in to. In the beginning Aristotle’s starts by giving a definition of friendship which is being able to mutually recognized goodwill. Both people need to know they have goodwill for each other to able to say they are friends. The three kinds of friendships are good, pleasant, and, useful. The useful friendship is a friendship that two people have because they have abilities or things that the other person needs. For example, someone that fixes computer might be friends with someone that is a doctor and when either one needs of the other they contact each other. Many people become friends that are like them and are interested in what they like or need so that the other person can be useful to them. It is more a convenience type of friendship because something is wanted once that reason is not there the friendship ends. This is something that is seen all the time and over and over it occurs in everyone’s life. I also agree that it is rare to find good friendships that want nothing in return but the good as the ultimate goal. Aristotle says there is only about one or two friends that a person will ever find in life.
