In his book, The Quest for the Trinity, Stephen R. Holmes argues that the so-called “Trinitarian revival” of the twentieth century is not a recovery of the traditional doctrine of the Trinity, but rather a misinterpretation of, and a departure from, the doctrine recognized in the patristic period, agreed upon in the fourth-century debates, and upheld, by all strands of the church, through both the medieval and Reformation periods with relatively minor disagreement (xv). Holmes’s purpose is not to disprove the modern theologians by direct interaction with their claims, but to show that their accounts of Trinitarian theology are at odds with Christian tradition. He sets out on a quest to explain the historical development of the doctrine accurately.…

Jesus Christ is the true God in human flesh. As stated in the beginning, everything was made in God’s image. Jesus proved to be the true image of God because of His actions and the way He lived His life until His death on the cross. As said in Colossians 1, Jesus is also stated to be the creator of all things. In the passage John 1, John states that “all things were made through him, and without him was not anything made that was made” (John 1:1-3).…

This is when the Nicene Creed was commissioned, and God the Father and God the Son were announced to be equally divine. Soon after this council meeting though, many of the priests who denounced Arius, began to follow his view. There were three dominant and not theologically invalid reasons that this was. As stated previously, homoousios was a prominent word used in the Creed, and a large part of the Creed hinged upon this word. What this word meant and how it was used was to say that God the Father and God the Son were made of the same substance, or “consubstantial” (72).…

To further clarify questions about Christian belief, the Council of Nicaea created the Nicene Creed. This creed was the most famous result of the council and was a statement and proclamation of faith that was issued by the bishops that made up the council. The Nicene Creed, signed at the council was very clear in its position on the arguments that brought the council together: We believe…in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of God, begotten from the Father, only-begotten, that is, from the substance of the Father, God from God, light from light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one substance (homo ousios) with the Father, through Whom all things were made…. He also claims that he and God are one in essence, which is taught in the Trinity. In another verse in the Gospel of John, Jesus says “Amen, Amen, I say to you. Before Abraham was made I am.” In Exodus, “I am” is the name God gives Moses when he asks what he should call him. In Matthew during Jesus’ trial, the priests ask him if he is the son of God and Jesus confirms saying, “Thou hast said it.…

The trinity is made up of the Father, Son and the Holy Spirit. Many people question why God the Father is the first person that makes up the trinity. The three reasons we learned in class why Father is first in the trinity is: if there is a son then there is a father, Jesus called God the Father “Father”, and God the Father has many characteristics of fatherhood. The Trinity started with God the Father and life starts with a “Father” and we are his children whom he made us all equal and all in his own image. God the Father is meant to be the beginning love which is why he is the first person of the Trinity.…

The first example of this came when John explained how Jesus handled the situation on the Bread of Life, because the people wanted to see a sign from him. The 5000 people that wanted a sign from Jesus wanted to be given vast amounts of bread every day, which Jesus already knew they wanted, and he told them, “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me will never hunger, and whoever believes in me will never thirst… for this is the will of my Father, that everyone who sees the Son and believes in him may have eternal life…” (JN 6:35-40). Jesus used the ‘I am’ phrase in this statement he gave to the people asking for bread, which is a phrase God used many times in the Old Testament. This is significant for Jesus to use because no other person dares to speak like that of God, but Jesus speaks in this manner to prove that he comes straight from God.…
