Forcing citizens of the US to fight. In the claimed to be “free” country, men were forced to partake in a war that they may not have been comfortable with. Is this freedom? This is not freedom. It is really just the opposite. If the county's most important attribute is freedom and democracy then why did the draft rioters of New York City not have a choice on whether on not they would fight in the war? Why was their an opting-out price that created social barriers? In the draft riot of 1863 this is exactly what happened. I believe American citizens shouldn’t be forced into war and if government is not abiding by their own rules then the New York City draft rioters should not have to either.
