An operating system, a software that is used to control computer functions and applications, changed how we use computers today. There are many different types of operating systems that were big in the 90’s. Some of these operating systems are Windows 95, Windows 98, Linux, Mac OS, and OS/2. Each of them are unique in their own way, whether it is the language that they are written in or what their kernel type is. Operating systems could have other differences as well, including what platforms they support, and their type of licensing, and also if it had a graphical user interface implemented in it or not.

One of the longest running Mac OS’s was called System 7. It ran from 1991 through 1997 and came with all Macs that were produced during that time span (Warren 1). The original Mac OS used a similar Kernel to what Microsoft used in windows. Although with Mac OS the majority of the operating system was closed source, but with some parts of it open source for public development. Mac OS like most operating systems in the 90’s would only run on x86 bit architectures. Mac OS was written in languages known as Objective C and C++. One of the reasons that Mac OS is written in Objective C is because “Mac OS is based on NeXT’s OPENSTEP and BSD Unix (“The Development of Computer Operating Systems” 2).” OS/2 was developed with the help of two companies working together IBM, and Microsoft to create the next operating system (Sanders 1). IBM and Microsoft told people that new programs would come out on OS/2 before they would come out on Windows, but OS/2 was said to be the lesser of the two operating systems, with less than 200,000 copies of it being sold (Pollack 2). Just for the fact is that it is open source and anyone can make it the way they want. Also for the reason that it is a free operating system, unlike the other operating system of the 90’s. These things making Linux the revolutionary operating system of its time. Mostly all operating systems of the 90’s operated on an x86 bit platform. With the exception of Linux, which operated on several platforms including but not limited to x86 bit, and ARM platforms. This was made possible by its modular Kernel which could be easily changed to work on multiple platforms unlike its Mac OS, and Windows
