Through the use of poems, poets show emotions, feelings and or events through the use of language choices to create representations of issues. The poem The new true anthem by Kevin Gilbert is challenging the key values and beliefs through society. This essay is aimed towards interested graduating students and how the cultural ideologies are seen through patriotism and political views that occur throughout the poem.
The first known date of The new true anthem was in 1988. This poem reflects the time of when the first settlers arrived in Australia in 1788 and about how they treated the Australian land and the native people. This shows that when the first felt settled upon Australia, they were seen as a threat because when they arrived they treated the continent as their own and they did not look after the land. This meant that they caused destructions to almost everywhere they went. This quote displays repetition to tell the reader that Gilbert has used this sentence to verbalise how he felt about the strong and beautiful land and that is his heritage. This tells us that due to the settlers, this land is no longer beautiful and strong and that the colonists have destroyed the land. This shows how patriotism by the fact that he would do anything for his country and how it has been used to reflect how the natives felt.
This shows how patriotism and political views have been shown and how it has challenged the cultural ideologies throughout the poem. Patriotism has challenged the ideologies by explaining that although the land belonged to the native people and they would do anything to keep it that way, the settlers still treated the natives badly and disrespected the land. Also how the political views challenge the cultural identities by talking about the historical background of Gilbert heritage and how he felt about the land and the fact that the colonists didn’t respect the continents
