Summary
The New Strong-Willed Child (2004) was written by Dr. James Dobson (2004) as an update to his first book, The Strong-Willed Child (1978). One of the most difficult tasks a person will have in life is raising children. The journey through parenting is even further tested when a parent is raising a child that goes beyond the norms of childhood antics and the strength of their will can seem stronger than the will of the parents. Children who have a strong require a very careful approach to shaping their will without crushing the spirit and that is what Dr. Dobson (2004) addresses in his updated book The New Strong-willed Child.

Being that my children are grown and out of the home, there is not much I can change as far as discipline is concerned. Although I will say that while reading The New Strong-Willed Child (2004) I realized some of the mistakes I made with my kids during their developmental years and it moved me to apologize to my adult children for those mistakes, ask for their forgiveness and encourage them in their own walk through their journey of parenting. My daughter has a daughter that is much more strong-willed than our son was and she is really struggling so I strive to encourage her through it. Another lesson I learned from the book is about my approach to my grand parenting. I had initially planned to discipline my grandchildren in the way I believe I should have done with my own children. I believed it was my duty to do that even though our daughter does not necessarily agree with Dr. Dobson’s (2004) style of parenting. Dr. Dobson (2004) however, made it a point to explain that grandparents should never go against how the parents of their grandchildren choose to discipline the kids or how they train them. (Dobson,
