Imagine starting a new school, in a new state, maybe even a new country. On the first day of class looking around, seeing you 're the only one whose skin color is not white, you’re the only one with dark curly hair, and you 're the only one who “doesn’t belong.” Upon entering the classroom you hear comments like “It 's a Mexican”, “Do you even speak English?”, “How did you cross the border?” That 's what students like Natalia Martinez, Genesis Garcia, Kendrick Rosado, and I had to deal with when starting a new school. Students have taken it upon themselves to decide where someone is from and how they got here. Kaiser Family Foundation, A foundation dedicated to inform the US public on national health issues, in 2014 the population of Hispanics and Latinos in America was 55 million. 55 Million! The United States Census Bureau informs us that there are 17 million more Hispanics and Latinos in America than African Americans, 37 million more than Asians, and 53 million more than American Indians. Therefore, Hispanics and Latinos are the nation 's largest ethnic or racial minority group, according to the United States Census Bureau. Hispanics and Latinos are our neighbors. With there being a big gap between the Hispanics and Latinos minority and the other minorities you would think people would know more about the Hispanic and Latino culture. In Raleigh high schools there are no classes offered about the culture of Hispanic and Latinos. There are classes offered about African Americans, Asians, and American Indians(Wake County 80). Students could learn and even fall in love with a country. Students could be introduced to a whole new world. Influenced to explore and learn about countries other than America. High school is where students are influenced the most and left with memories they 'll have forever. Having a class that 'll teach Hispanic/ Latin American culture could even make a change in what a student wants to study in College. The major change that would occur after adding this class is students be less prejudice and discriminatory. I know that discrimination against a culture, race, and ethnic group won 't go away overnight or even at all but it could be minimized. With students being educated, they 'll learn the difference between Hispanic and Latino, they 'll learn that not every Hispanic or Latino in america is illegal. They 'll learn about the stereotypes people have against Hispanics and Latinos learn that they are untrue. Students will learn the proper way of asking where someone is from and not just asking “Are you Mexican?” Students will learn that Hispanics and Latinos aren 't bad people and the culture is beautiful. Learn the proper way to ask where someone is from and learn not to assume that a Hispanic and Latino can be in the US without being illegal. This class will better the future of America by educating
