In the book “The New Puberty: How to Navigate Early Development in Today’s Girls”, authors Louise Greenspan, MD, and Julianna Deardorff, PhD write to inform parents, teachers, doctors, family members, and anyone concerned, why puberty is occurring earlier in young girls than it ever has. Just one generation ago, the “normal” onset of puberty was not what it is now. Today, girls are developing faster; features like pubic hair and breast budding are appearing years earlier. Though the time girls begin menstruation is still fairly the same as past generations, many parents and child advocates are concerned that there is something seriously wrong. This book helps ensure those who are worried that puberty, though may be starting earlier, is still …show more content…
Research has proven that obesity plays a factor in early puberty. Girls who are more obese tend to begin the pubertal process earlier. Since the 1960’s, it has been known that sexual maturation is correlated more with body size than with age and that once a girl meets the certain requirement of fat tissue, hormones that correspond with sexual maturation will begin to produce (52). Since the rate of obesity has increased dramatically compared to past generations, more girls are entering puberty earlier than before. The environment plays a considerable role in early puberty. Beginning as early as in the womb, exposures to chemicals and other environmental culprits effect us dramatically. By the time a girl goes through puberty, the exact cause may be unknown since chemicals are in the air and the girl has been exposed to all sorts of pollutants all her life. A chemical used in dairy and meat called Xenoestrogen, a hormone mimicker, acts like estrogen in the body. Many scientists believe that this chemical is one of the factors for early pubertal timing because of its previous reactions to the body. Xenoestrogen is surprisingly in many household products like pesticides, cosmetics, toiletries, etc. According to the authors, “more than 93 percent of Americans have traces of this chemical in their bodies …show more content…
Depression and anxiety are very common effects of early pubertal timing. Reasons being could be because they are insecure about their changing bodies compared to their peers who are not developing breasts or hair yet. These girls also have an increased risk of experimenting with drugs and alcohol earlier and also have earlier sexual experiences. Because of their physical features, older guys may be attracted to them, putting these girls at more risk of these situations because they look older than they actually are. With early puberty, there is an increase in the risk of breast cancer and heart disease. There are serious effects of early puberty that many do not realize until someone they know are affected by it. The authors provide information on how to manage the exposure to chemicals and other things that play a role in early puberty. It is impossible to stay away from everything that may have an effect on early puberty, considering how much our bodies are already exposed to chemicals in the environment and the food we eat, but there are many precautions that can be taken into consideration when buying certain foods or household products. The reader is also informed about the importance of having a healthy lifestyle and were given advice for having conversations about puberty with their young

The 19th Century feelings surrounding the proper course of action at the onset of puberty in females reveals the lack of consideration being made for the social and mental health of women. For example, French doctor Marc Colombat suggests that pubescent girls be removed from school so that they may be under the constant watch and care of their mothers. Furthermore, he notes that preventing them from attending theatre performances and reading certain books would be helpful as girls reach puberty. This advice, while likely well-intentioned, appears to help support the opposition to women obtaining higher levels, which would increase their mental capacity and judgment. Likewise, the forceful removal of girls from their schools at the start of puberty likely inhibited their social development among peers.…

Within the last thirty years, the rise obesity has become a major topic of concern in the United States. While many argue that this increase in size is due to disruptions in the “energy balance model,” which states that the obesity is due to a combination of eating too many calories and not exercising enough (Smith & Cummins, 2009), Julie Guthman argues in her book Weighing In that this definition focuses too much on the individual’s actions without looking at the broader health consequences derived from the built environment, agricultural policies, and neoliberal capitalism. However, although Guthman does offer some excellent points, specifically with her political ecology perspective in the alternative food movement, she does little to…

It is becoming evident that humans are continuously exposed to a plethora of chemicals from food, medicinal agents, occupational activity and contaminated sites. Exposure to chemicals begins in utero and continues throughout life. Toxicological risk assessment of individual chemicals provides the quantitative estimate of its possible effects on human health. When humans are exposed to chemicals, they are not exposed to a single chemical only, but simultaneous or sequential exposure occurs to a mixture of chemicals. The standard definition of a chemical mixture is any set of multiple chemicals, regardless of source that may or may not be identifiable that may contribute to joint toxicity in a target population (USEPA 2000, ATSDR 2004).…
