The fourteen-line stanza by Emma Lazarus describes the Statue of Liberty, the symbolic meaning behind the words, in the first twelve lines. “Not like the brazen grant of Greek fame", the speaker is denial any link to the colossus. The speaker continues to disclaim any relation with the colossus by stating "With conquering limbs astride from land to land; / Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand / a mighty woman with a torch". This informs the reader that the mighty woman has no desire to conquer; she is to be known for her flaming torch, not for her limbs. For example, when Irish moved into neighborhoods, many existing families moved out, fearing dangers and disease. Since Irish immigrants were associated with violence and crime and known for their unsanitary living conditions. Many uneducated Irish-America were left low paying jobs that no American would do; jobs that include: coal mines, building the railroads and the canals. But this would not always be the way for Irish-America’s. Soon they would gain the respect that they desperately
