Under the executive ordered by President George W Bush dated April 27, 2004, the office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (Health IT) was created within the office of secretary of health and human services its mission was to construct the infrastructure for the development and implementation of a nationwide health information technology system that will be available to all Americans by 2014. With this new system, Health care facilities will have the ability to share patient information with their staff, patient as well as other facilities through the access of this electronic records new system. This mandate will improve the quality of care, improve accuracy and the delivery of care, the convenience of delivery of medical care, medical diagnosis, improve patient information, communication among clinicians, promote better coordination of care, efficiency that will result in cost reduction. The purpose of his paper is to provide an overview of the EHR mandate, in this paper I will discuss the goals of the mandate, the effect of the new affordable Health Care Act by President Obama of the health electronic records, the possible threats to patient confidentiality paused by the mandate and the risks of violating the federal Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996, (HIPAA). After reading this paper will have a clear understanding of the mandate its risks and benefits, as I will share personal experience with the EHR.
