Asian Americans are nerds. Amazing at math, tech savvy, nerds. They are all work, no play and ‘fun’ does not exist in their dictionary. Lacking good communication skills, social skills, and cultural knowledge, they have little to no friends. This is how we stereotype against them. People treat Asian Americans differently and they discriminate against them because of this stereotype. The Asian American stereotype is detrimental to society and it needs to end.
Asians have been stereotyped against for the longest time. At first when they came to America as servants they were looked upon as weak and not as good as the Caucasians. Overwhelming anti-Asians led to the Chinese Exclusion act and around that time, during WW2, propaganda against ‘yellows’ worsened their situation. The Battle Hymn Of A Tiger Mother, a bestselling novel by Amy Chua really added to this stereotype. Amy Chua, the mother in the story, was very strict with her daughters. They wouldn’t be allowed to spend time with friends or go on sleepovers. On the other hand, they had plenty of time to get good at music and gain excellence in academics. This adds to the stereotype because the book is about two very smart Asian American girls. What people take away from the book, is that Asian mothers are tiger mothers and that Asian kids are super smart. Movies and TV shows also play a huge role. Asians are generally shown as smart through those mediums. For example, Cristina Yang in Grey’s Anatomy. Or maybe Hans in 2 Broke Girls. In one episode of Family Guy, Peter Griffin was asked to take out a calculator, so he put an Asian kid on his desk. Sometimes, it just happens that an Asian is shown in a certain way and sometimes it is done to make people laugh. Either way, it adds to the stereotype, and that can be
