Upon researching this neighborhood, the information we gathered was able to give us the gist of how the neighborhood life in Oakdale was like. From what we had discovered, it seemed like an average neighborhood; it was not too shabby, but it wasn’t what we considered to be high class, either. A subject that I would like to bring up in particular in my analysis is the correlation between the educational level of the neighborhood (sourced by the information we found online) with the statistics given by the neighborhood school and its surroundings.
As presented in our data, “With regards to the level of education, the percentage of people 3 years and older in a K-12 school was 29.3% of the population. Over 25% of the population had not graduated from high school, and about 13% of the population graduated from a four year college or university.” With these numbers, the education level of the neighborhood is not that high, with less than one-fifth of the overall population having a college degree. Now compare that with the MEAP scores gotten by the students of the neighborhood school, River City Scholars Charter Academy:
9% 2013 MEAP Math Proficiency;
36% 2013 MEAP Reading Proficiency; 2% 2013 MEAP Science Proficiency; 2% 2013 MEAP Social Science Proficiency;
23% 2013 MEAP Writing Proficiency the educational curriculum given to the students could use some revamping. As seen above, the proficiencies consist of mostly low scores.
