Meagen Kathleen Monahan wrote“The Green Book”: A Representation of the Black Middle Class and Its Resistance to Jim Crow through Entrepreneurship and Respectability, for her dissertations. Her paper provides a lot answers to most of my research questions. It gives a personal story of Gene Williams’s experience of being turned away for being African American and it’s a story that is after the Civil Rights Act of 1964 was pass. On this one example alone my thought that business owner would rather make money then turn someone away is proven wrong, but again this is one example. Her goes into detail on what Jim Crow laws were like during these times. She given goes into great detail on what is was like to travel around the country during these times. She would use stories from people that live through these times on what it was like traveling as African American family, even if you brought their green book. It did not ensure safe travel and safe places to go. She uses the example of African Americans buying tickets for the same price as their fellow white Americans, but could seat in the same cart of them and would be seated in terrible condition. He doesn’t want to look into the African Americans that defied the odds and became wealth in this time of discriminations. He wants to look at the everyday African American worker. The everyday worker was very limited in what they could spend their hard eared money. Foster points to traveling aboard, but not all families could afford this so they had to travel within the United States. He points too many well off African America that suggested that to deal with White business owner it was to trick them into accepting their money. He uses many sources from very famous African American people that were either newly freed slaves or were born free.
