Beauty And The Geek Character Analysis

Firstly, Beauty and the Geek claimed they conducted the “ultimate social experiment,” and yet, remains considered as a show in the genre of reality TV. Since Beauty and the Geek subsisted as a social experiment, altered variables, for example the environment, influenced participants to conduct themselves in a different way than how they would behave on a regular basis because of the stimuli the show provided. Beauty and the Geek is comparable to Big Brother because they were filmed under altered conditions. For Big Brother specifically, in comparison to Beauty and the Geek, the contestants were placed under a much more controlled environment by being locked into a compound which was cut-off from the rest of the outside world. This meant no …show more content…
Again, the show attempted to showcase reality, but failed, and instead created a falsified reality. Selecting stereotypes provides multiple personality types that reality contains, but stereotypes are a generalization of a group, and they do not represent “real world” people properly. The main reason for showcasing a variety of personalities is for entertainment and to attempt to stir-up conflict because like previously stated, reality TV and its viewers love drama. These personality conflicts occur on a day to day basis, but people are not strategically placed within an isolated living environment in order to create these conflicts. Thus, both Beauty and the Geek and Big Brother present an altered reality by generalizing groups and making sure they clash with one …show more content…
For example, Beauty and the Geek was a competition show with challenges within it. So, essentially to remain on the show you had to exhibit knowledge in an area to win the challenge. As for Big Brother, the show was a competition to stay in the house, but there were not any challenges they had to compete in along the way. These people were also completely cut off from the real world. Which shows a false sense of reality because society is constantly connected. Cutting people off from the outside world does not support the fact that it is a reality TV show because that is not reality.
Even though reality shows do not showcase a realistic approach to reality, they present important themes and lessons for the audience to consider. The first important lesson from Beauty and the Geek is, do not judge a book by its cover. This show presents this message by showing that even though the guys participating on the show appear nerdy and unattractive, they are some of the greatest people anyone will ever meet. This is an important lesson for our society because life is changing rapidly, and with so many

According to Catherine Orenstein, people today have been fantasizing over the storybook romance because they are obsessed with finding their own happily ever after. Our infatuations over fairy tales have been strongly shaped by romance-based reality television. In “Fairy Tales and a Dose of Reality,” Orenstein argues that reality television gives a false sense of hope of what love actually is: the television shows promote that love is based off status and appearance. According to Orenstein, in the original Cinderella story, Prince Charming falls for Cinderella’s gown and slippers but fails to recognize her face (285). Society’s expectations on what love and romance should be contradict the original fairy tales’ meanings.…

Reality TV shows have impacted society negatively because they promote aggressive behavior and the use of drugs and alcohol causes society to imitate famous celebrities. While most of us think of Survivor as being the first reality TV show that came on air in 2000, reality television really started in 1948 with Allen Funt’s Hidden Camera show. Before it became a television show Funt had a radio show called Hidden Microphone which gave regular people unusual scenarios to react too (Slocum). Hidden Camera was an unscripted show that broadcasted unsuspecting people reacting to pranks. Then in 1992, MTV aired its first reality show the Real World.…

If you were to have read Cheryl Isacc’s article, “What Reality TV is doing to Women,” then you would see that reality TV is actually affecting women greatly. Throughout the article, Isacc makes it known that TV shows such as, Celebrity Apprentice, Basketball Wives, and Real Housewives of New York City are in fact corrupting the minds of women and as she states, “makes it hard to tell the difference between a reality star and the average woman.” In my opinion, this means that people are trying hard to be just like their favorite reality stars. This is a bad thing considering the fact that most reality stars are selfish and arrogant. But how does that make sense, aren’t reality stars supposed to be average people?…

Another example that reality is distorted in both “Beauty and the Geek” and Big Brother” is the fact a camera is on the participants constantly. In the case of “Big Brother,” the cameras were on them 24/7. In sociology the term is called, “The Hawthorne Effect,” which means a person changes their normal behavior to perceive themselves in a positive manner in the outsiders/ other person’s perspective. If people are acting oddly because they are on a TV show, how is it reality? Their literal behavior is changed because they know they are being watched.…

Ultimately, she suggests that her research shows that almost all participants showed some type of comparison between themselves and the reality star. The show itself bears a strong resemblance to the reality shows on broadcast television, in particular Big Brother on CBS. Big Brother is a competitive show that “follows a group of people living together in a house outfitted with dozens of high-definition cameras and microphones recording their every move, 24 hours a day” (CBS). These competitors are willingly putting their lives under a microscope to be examined as pure entertainment by a significant number of viewers. They knowingly are making their life into a form of art-like entertainment. However, when the show is finished, what happens to participants?…
