The author’s goal is to show that GM foods have been proven to be safe and the importance of GM technology. The article is extremely effective because of the facts and statistics Bailey uses to support and back up her ideas. Bailey begins her article by stating that after reviewing over 1,783 scientific articles that “scientific research conducted so far has not detected any significant hazards directly connected with the use of genetically modified crops” (Bailey). Bailey then goes on to state that big name organizations such as the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the World Health Organization, and the American Medical Association back up this idea. This immediately gives the author credibility. Bailey then states her own thesis that since GM foods have been proven safe, we should take advantage of this unique technology. The author then goes on to give facts to prove the benefits of GM technology. Bailey quotes the FDA, saying that from 1996 to 2011, GM biotech crops have successfully reduced global pesticide by over 1.04 billion pounds (Bailey). Facts from The New York Time proving that GM technology is responsible for saving “Florida’s oranges from a deadly bacterium that would otherwise wipe out the entire crop”. Young gives the reader unbiased facts about both the pros and cons of GM foods, in hopes that the reader develops their own opinion. Young does present her own view on the topic, but still remains bias. Young’s candid tone plays a big part in the article and makes it effective. Young chooses to use everyday language, making the scientific topic easy for anyone to understand. Using language like “freak-out”, “frenzy”,” lab monstrosities”, the information is presented in a more relaxed manner. However, Young is able to give the reader accurate and important information about GMO’s. The article starts out defining the basis on which GM foods are classed. Young compares and contrasts different scientific findings on the health concerns associated with GM foods, by presenting expert testimony. Quotes from doctors, scientists, and farmers help make immense arguments both for and against GMO’s. The article concludes by Young presenting her own option on GM foods. That being said Young leaves the reader able to decide if they think GMO’s are friend or
