“Today's electronic devices, also give off high-energy, short-wavelength, blue and violet light, which may affect vision and even prematurely age the eyes. Early research shows that overexposure to blue light could contribute to eye strain and discomfort and may lead to serious conditions in later life such as age-related macular degeneration (AMD), which can cause blindness.” As stated in an American Optometric Association article titled, The 21st Century Child: Increased Technology Use May Lead to Future Eye Health and Vision Issues (“21st Century” par. 5). Along with the possible health effects of over exposure to computer screens and tablets, it can also negatively affect a child’s penmanship skills. Many schools lend or borrow tablets or laptops to their students throughout the year. This allows them to prepare and submit their assignments electronically. This may seem handy and even more environmentally friendly, but it almost entirely eliminates the need for children to acquire penmanship skills that would serve important as an adult. Those elementary cursive lessons are becoming a thing of the past, as more schools are doing away with them due to technology. Not only are they highly and overly exposed to technology at home, it’s also starting to become a concern in the classrooms as well. Technology can serve many great purposes when it comes to things like healthcare, but when implemented in schools it should be used sparingly. The increase of technology has in some ways encouraged lazy behavior. Children shouldn’t rely on technology to do the work for them; it should be used as an aid. Children go to school to learn, not to use a device to calculate the answer or correct grammar or spelling errors for them. In addition, there are some concerning long term effects associated with the overexposure to handheld, computer screens, ect. The more time a child is spent sitting in front of a screen, the more likely it is that they will acquire eye problems that could possible affect them throughout their adult lives. Also, schools are spending more time and resources on better technology and forgetting about important skills children will need later in life, like penmanship skills. This becomes important in adulthood when a signature is required on important documents. All in all, the more advancements that are made in technology, the less the children of today and the children of the future will
