In recent discussion of the National Anthem, one controversial issue has been the NFL players taking a knee during it. In the article, “They Took a Knee” by Megan Garber, The take the knee movement is a movement where athletes and famous artists are taking a knee during the National Anthem to protest against the injustice that people of color are faced with in the United States. On the one hand, people argue that these athletes are patriotic since they are protesting against police brutality and a country that opposes black people and people of color. On the other hand, people oppose that the NFL players are unpatriotic because they are showing disrespect to the men and women who have served for this country when they are kneeling during the National Anthem. According to a study conducted by abc news, Study Says Kids Emulate Athletes, kids ranked famous athletes among the most admired people in their lives (73 percent) — second only to their parents (92 percent). Athletes change people’s life, whether it’s on or off the field, these people are inspirational to the younger generation. Since they are well respect, many parents wouldn’t want their child to be admiring a person who disrespect our flag by kneeling during the National Anthem. However, these parents are overlooking a bigger picture that these athletes are trying to get across. They maybe disrespecting our flag, but they are taking a knee for what they believe in and trying to start a change in the U.S. Is that what parents want from their kids, to always stand up for what their beliefs are?
