Parents and Childhood Obesity
A few hundred years ago people had to live off the land and supplying food, water, and shelter for their children and themselves. As we fast forward to the present day though, many things have changed. Many parents do not care about their children’s diets or exercise resulting in children becoming obese at younger ages. Some parents today influence their children towards unhealthy lifestyles because they do not care. Most parents today without even knowing influence their children negatively on what they should or should not eat. For example, children look up to their parents. Therefore, if parents choose to have a healthy lifestyle themselves and go exercise, their children may see what they’re doing and want to do it too. For some parents the reason they get fast food is because they did not have time to cook that night. While this may be a valid excuse, parents should have a healthy dinner ready most nights even if it has to be prepared the night before. When parents do this they can open children up to new healthy foods that they have never had. Parents can help their children develop healthy eating habits early on by serving reasonably sized portions of healthy foods including vegetables and lean meats such as poultry and fish.Another way parents can influence their children to have a healthy lifestyle is by helping them stay active. One way parents can keep children active is youth sports which can develop good exercise habits. Also, when a child is on a youth sport team they can develop friendships with the other players on their team.
