SECOND REFLECTION PAPER

First Requirement- Social structure and interaction in everyday life

Ascribed status: A social status a person is assigned either at birth or involuntary later on in life.

Achieved status: A social position you collect voluntarily because of choice and/or earned.

The ascribed status that I feel is the most important to me is I am a Caucasian white female. This means a lot to me because I know I can not choose the color I am or if I am a male or female. In today’s society this is changing. Today if you are a girl you can surgically change into a male or vis versa, if you want to pay the money to have the surgeries necessary.

Right away from when you are born you are either wearing the color pink or blue. Males have masculine roles which are usually associated with dominance,

In high school I was always hard working and I tried to put in 110% of my effort in whatever I was doing. I like this ascribed status because I know I tried and I know I deserved the rewards at the end of every sports season. I worked my butt off because I cared and I wanted to be the best.

Today my achieved status is I am a try hard. I get called a “try hard” because I try at everything I do. Every sport I play, every job I work, and every class I take I work hard. I get told I go above and beyond the requirements through school and work but I know I am learning something. If I am going to be spending my own money and making as much money as I can while I work at Matt’s grill and Bar I want to make my costumers feel welcome and I want to be tipped very well.

In the future I plan on working as a registered nurse in the emergency room and I want to have an achieved status as a “try hard” and a hard working female. I want to save lives and have others be proud that they have nurses and doctors that can make a deference. So, in the future I would like to see my ascribed status as Dr.

Do you think that people in your community judge others based on look, and do you think you are being defined by others? Status is based on how we dress, look, and where we come from and is supposed to be interpreted in a positive way. This is because our differences are what make us unique and special in our own ways. Unfortunately, people in the world are using our differences to separate us into multiple categories.…

One accomplishment that took a great deal of effort was lacrosse. Right from the start of freshman year, I knew that I wanted to become a good lacrosse player, enough to make an impact on the game. I did numerous clinics and leagues for two years straight, I worked as hard as I possibly could to become the player I wanted to be. Throughout my training, there were times where I felt like I was never going to be as good as I longed to be, but my family and my coach motivated me to work through because they felt that the hard work would be worth it. Whenever I was feeling like this, I would always turn to them because they reminded me of how hard I worked and how great I would feel once I felt the reward.…

    Eckert Gender Roles

In “Learning to be Gendered”, Penelope Eckert and Sally McConnell-Ginet (2013) argue that from the time that children are born, they are taught how to behave based on their gender. This is gender socialization in its basic form—defining the way each of us should act based on gender. In the words of Penelope Eckert and Sally McConnell-Ginet (2013), “at birth, many hospital nurseries provide pink caps for girls and blue caps for boys, or in other ways to provide some visual sign of the sex that has been assigned to the baby”(p. 737). This is an example of how society places expectations on the colors males and females are understood to associate with. As children get older, they continue to experience pressure surrounding their appearance and…

During most of my collegiate career, several professors have stated that gender roles are determined prior to the birthing process. As soon as the sex of the baby is discovered, the mother would begin purchasing nursery decorations, clothing, and toys based solely on color: blue for boys and pink for girls. I would even go on further to state that gender roles are determined before conception actually begins. According to Judith Lorber’s article, “The Social Construction of Gender”, “gender is constantly created and re-created out of human interaction, out of social life…” I can think back to when I was younger, around elementary school age, telling my peers at the time that I wanted a “bunch” of kids and I already planned what they would…

Being set apart is about the journey along with the end success. I have set myself apart as a student at Texas Tech due to my leadership, ability to make outside commitments while supporting my course load, and my hard work and ability to overcome adversity. For the duration of high school, I was a leader for my younger peers by volunteering over 400 hours with Shallowater’s Middle School One Act Play program. I held the position of High School Assistant Director for two years, and the opportunity to influence young students was extraordinary.…

The novel I decided to read and analyze was “Two Boys Kissing” by David Levithan. Throughout the novel Levithan describes the day to day lives of seven different teenage boys and the struggles they face because they identify as gay. I will be examining the concepts of constructing gender, being transgender, and the correlation of compulsory heterosexuality and discrimination against LGBT people. Gender is constructed at a very young age.…

If I had to choose one phrase to describe myself it would be, “Above and beyond the call of duty,” or as I like to say, “A and B the C of D.” It’s something I read in a book a long time ago that has always stuck with me. Race has also affected my life in many ways and continues to affect it in my everyday life. I identify as being white since that is the color of my skin. Race is not something that someone can choose or change because it is how they are born. One of the most important identities to me is my blackness. As far back as I can remember I knew I was black and was very aware of the meaning of that. I went to a majority-minority middle, and high school, I live in an all-black neighborhood and, of course, I live in an all black household. For most of my life, I have mostly been around black people and people of color, so just going to school with majority white people is definitely a different experience. Race has shaped my life because growing up, most people who I saw in the mass media was white people and this includes my books, or on the magazines I bought was white.…

As it says on “What are gender roles and stereotypes”, “Gender roles in society means how we’re expected to act, speak, dress, groom, and conduct ourselves based upon our assigned sex. For example, girls and women are generally expected to dress in typically feminine ways and be polite, accommodating, and nurturing. Men are generally expected to be strong, aggressive, and bold. For example, pink used to be considered a masculine color in the U.S. while blue was considered feminine.…
