Walking down a supermarket in Japan, I ended up seeing many foods with labels. For example, soybean oils were labeled as either “non-GMO” or “GMO separated”. Living in the bay area for half of my life, I was fortunate to have access to buy organic foods from various supermarkets or even grow foods in my own backyard. While I was lucky enough to live in California, there are nine crops in the United States that are currently made into a genetically modified organism and sold to the public. The United States and Canadas are the two countries that have not require GMOs to be labeled (Cinici). As indicated by a December Associated Press-GFK survey, 66 percent of Americans support requiring makers to label items that contain genetic engineered organisms or nourishments developed from seeds designed in labs. If the government is able to create a law that forces producers to label GMOs on the nutritious values label found on all food products, then consumers would be able to see what food they are consuming on a daily basis and make a decision themselves. Those people that oppose eating genetically modified food are less likely going to eat GMOs which will help decrease the negative effects it could have on human health. By looking at what food people are eating, the labeling helps to inform people to make a judgment about the food that can prolong everyone’s health. I understand there are also people who go against the idea of labeling GMOs. However, those are people coming from large corporations that try to push away the law because labeling would make them lose money (Faber). Human health is more important than gaining lots of money from creating more diseases. Selling GMOs at a cheaper price and gaining lots of profit should not be used as an excuse for providing the human with basic rights to choose whether or not they want to eat
