Social Media Isolation

“In 2015, Facebook had 17.93 billion dollars of revenue, employed 12,691 people, with 191.3 million users in the US alone. As of January 2015, Facebook had more than 1.59 billion global monthly active users, including over close to 1.44 billion mobile monthly active users.” (https://www.statista.com/topics/751/facebook/) Facebook is a massive industry with a massive impact on its users. Social media itself was designed to bring people together, but it may in fact be doing the very opposite and spreading the isolation that it was determined to be rid of. (Marche pg 15) “We are living in an isolation that would have been unimaginable to our ancestors, and yet we have never been more accessible. (Marche pg 14) How did this happen? If social media can assist people to manage degrees of scalable sociality through the platforms they use, this may help to keep these balanced and under control.” (Miller et al. 2016 pg 200) This is another example of an advantage of social media that can help to boost mental health rather than hinder it. These attitudes reflect the common critique of applications such as Tinder or Grindr as tools for superficial relationships, dominated by users seeking casual sexual encounters and one- night stands rather than long-term relationships.” (Miller et al. 2016 pg 201) Such apps are a great way to boost self-esteem because you receive the attention that any human being would desire. However, you need to be careful on apps like these because things can go from casual to creepy very quickly. “Tinder is a ‘dating app’, but more precisely it is a means to initiate cross gender conversation – one that does not involve getting so drunk that you feel brave enough to make a move on someone, but in a condition which may lead to irresponsible consequences.” (Miller, Daniel. “Social Media and Social Relationships.”) Tinder can be used to create temporary happiness and alleviate loneliness by receiving the attention that you want and making up for the lack of attention that you may be needing from another part of your life. Tinder is usually used as a last resort as a quick loneliness fix for people that may not have the means or the confidence to try out a real life relationship or dating yet. These apps can help to make a person feel wanted for a while, while hopefully keeping feelings of loneliness at
