The bosses were cruel and mean to the employees, and the building conditions were unsafe. Every day the workers had to put their lives at risk because they needed the job for the money, and they couldn’t do anything to make the conditions better. “Steel doors to the hall and stairs are locked until closing time. The corridor leading to the elevator is narrow, and there are many fire hazards in the building” (Entry 15). These conditions aren’t safe for the workers. With the Industrial Revolution, there was a higher demand for certain things, like clothing, and now that they had more equipment, they could meet that demand. But that meant the workers had to work long hours and receive little to no pay based on how much work they complete in a day. The women who made clothing would sit at long tables in a locked room, and work until they were released. The hallways leading to the elevator were narrow because the women were forced to let men check their bags to make sure there weren’t any stolen materials inside. If there was a fire inside the factory, the women wouldn’t be able to get to the elevator in time. Only one person could go at a time, and many people would get left behind. Since the doors in the factory were locked, they wouldn’t be able to get out if there is some sort of urgent emergency. On top of the building conditions, the way the work system was made up made things unsafe for workers. They had to work long hours, and after working a certain amount of time, they get tired, and make more mistakes. That one mistake could take their life and possibly the lives of others. Without Industrialization, none of these issues would have been created because there wouldn’t have been that high demand and the equipment used to create the bad working
