Are smartphones having a positive or negative impact on us?
Growing up, most of us came across the television show “Star Trek”, which was well known for the use of fictitious gadgets. Most of the gadgets they showcased in the show are not imaginary anymore. One of the gadgets they showed was a tricorder, a multifunctioning handheld device “for sensor scanning, data analysis, and recording data.”[1] A smartphone is a modern day representation of a tricorder. “Informants indicated that the use of smartphones has changed the way we spend our downtime.”[3] It is true as it can be proved from everyday examples. If we are bored, we can use our smartphones to watch movies, play games or get updated with news. We can also utilize this downtime to watch educational videos or read scientific blogs over the internet. The smartphones have also helped people who want to appear busy to people around them. However, many people argue that the use of smartphones have also limited our human contact. For example, if early days, if we wanted to know the way to our destination, we would probably ask someone for it but nowadays we can simple check our destination from our smartphones. Although it is right to say that smartphones have resulted in lack of human contact but we are more connected to people than we were ever before through the use of social …show more content…
There are also many apps which can be used to record blood pressure, sugar levels, etc. Some fitness apps like Nike+ help maintain fitness and they also provide fitness plans for different body types. Moreover, smartphones can also be used to investigate symptoms of diseases over the internet. However, as per an article from CNN, it can be dangerous if patients keep avoiding going to doctors for necessary tasks [5]. There is also a risk of personal health data getting hacked on smartphones as the most of the data is stored online. Almost all smartphones come equipped with Bluetooth which is vulnerable and can be used to hack personal health data [6]. Although, the use of smartphones for health purposes might incur some risks but the probability of getting our data hacked is very low. Also, if we go to doctors for monthly check-ups and also track our health on smartphone, it will surely be
