Based on Major’s research there are four aspects that determine the experience of the women who encountered an abortion. Gestational age of the fetus is one of the aspects. Most abortions occur during the first trimester where the fetus is the farthest thing from looking like an actual human being. Procedures used for first trimester abortions are seen as less violent and destructive than second trimester procedures. Women feel less regret after the abortion if it is executed within the earlier gestational period. “The experience of abortion may also vary as a function of a woman 's ethnicity or culture” (Major 2009). Major’s statistics are quite interesting.
The abortion rate for Black women is 3.1 times the rate for White women, whereas the abortion rate for women of “other” races (Asian or Pacific Islander, American Indian, Alaska Native Women) is 2.0 times the rate for White women. Black women also have abortions later in their pregnancies than do White women and women of other races. PTSD or PAS (Post-Abortion Syndrome) are both issues that could potentially be an issue for a woman who has undergone an abortion because of the symptoms confirmed through the three categories of PTSD. Life can be very stressful while going through the abortion process and stress is a major trigger of depression based on the research of Harvard University. If one were to develop symptoms of PTSD or depression, there are several things that could help overcome those obstacles.
