Instead look at the many shelters in the local area, many shelters have purebred dogs, and even puppies. It is sad that a dog, puppy, or even a cat has to die because someone is buying from a pet store. Shelters get a bad name because many are high kill shelters, while others are not. The people that volunteer at shelters care about animals and want to help stop the overpopulation but it is inevitable if there are people out there running puppy mills breeding 500 or more dogs every 3 months. The people that run and operate puppy mills do not care about the wellbeing of the animals they are selling, they only care about how much money is going in to their pockets.…

Bathrooms with no soap and water would be right next to the place where the meat was getting processed if there was even a bathroom and workers would urinate anywhere. Lunchrooms were scarce, and workers ate where they worked. This raised the eyebrows of many readers when Sinclair showed the sanitary conditions of the meat and it even reached the attention of President Theodore Roosevelt and acted by signing the Meat Inspection Act of 1906 and the Pure Food and Drug Act of 1906. The book had a significant impact politically and socially that has not been established since the infamous book Uncle Tom’s Cabin in the early 1850s. Not only did Mr.Sinclair expose the…

Fear drives the irrational fear that all pit bulls are dangerous and should be banned. It is wrong to kill dogs just for being a certain type of breed. People often claim their dog was wrongfully put to death. It was on the Nashville news the other day that a man’s dog was shot by a police officer just because he was a pit bull. The dog was not attacking or attempting to bite the officer, just barking.…

This restriction on pit bulls is called Breed-Specific Legislation, or BSL. There are “about 200 cities and towns… [that] restrict or prohibit ownership of certain breeds of dogs” (Mott). This new epidemic of pit bull attacks has caused certain cities to ban the ownership of them. Most shelters will say to not put your hands in the cages, this is to prevent upper respiratory infection and kennel cough, because not every dog there will have the greatest immune system. Other diseases like feline panleukopenia, canine parvovirus, Lyme disease, and heartworm are all factors and extremely expensive to treat. Pet store animals don’t carry these diseases which is an upside, but that is because they only sell new puppies that weren 't saved from the streets. Shelters do their best but if the chance of recovery is low most of the time the animals are euthanized. The next reason is aggression, pets from all over with differing backgrounds come in to shelters every day, and some can be highly…
