Have you ever heard of texting thumbs? Chances are you have, but do you really understand what it means? Texting thumbs cause swelling in the tendons, and consequently enough this goes to show the negative affect social media is having on everyone from young teens to adults all over the world. Social media is causing anxiety, depression, self esteem issues, addiction, and even weakening basic social skills.
Social media is starting to have a great impact on people’s everyday life. According to Connecticut Health, “90 percent of teens surveyed, ages 13 to 17, reported to have used some form of social media in their lives”(Feliciano). Some popular forms of social media sites include: Snapchat, Instagram, Twitter and Music.ly. These sites allow account holders to communicate and transmit photos for their notorious followers to like. Not only are kids obsessed with these apps, but some are even making a living off of them. For example Alexis Ren and Jay Alvarrez a (former internet couple)

Nash Grier for example, became famous from posting funny skits and relatable jokes on vine. Nash now gets paid about “25,000 to 100,000 dollars” just for posting a Vine with the company's product, states Child Mind Institute(Ehmke). Some are taking their careers even further, and becoming big time actors all because of a simple social media site. As you can see, this has a positive effect on the world, but it also has a downfall. Couples especially can see great damage to their relationship because of social media. Jay and Alexis for example eventually broke up because social media affected their relationship. As Alexis tweeted, “The relationship wasn’t good enough for his business anymore”, this shows that the internet can cause anxiety and put a strain on a relationship. A study at The Center of Mental Health in UCLA states that, “anxiety and depression has become 45% more common in teens due to social
