The average American spends approximately 5 hours a day watching television. The substance that is viewed will determine what is learned. Furthermore, the programs that Americans decide to watch will determine either the positive or negative effects of television. Some Americans watch television for educational purposes while others watch it for entertainment and to spend quality time with family. Therefore, each American household will have a different outcome of how television affects them directly. Television has a direct influence on the intelligence levels of Americans based on the programs that are viewed and how they mentally process the information within it.

A great way to stay informed is by viewing the news. When Americans watch the news, they learn and retain information that is pertinent to the local area and news around the country. For example, CNN.com displays the news network’s slogan as “the most trusted name in news”. Considering the fact that the news network hosts major news events such as the Presidential Election and breaking news from around the world, it shows that the news network is a monumental source for news that Americans can tune into. The news is loaded with enlightening information, whether it shows Americans a particular area where bad news is happening or if it highlights accomplishments from a well-respected citizen of this country. In addition, television enables us to view the news in real time versus reading about it days after the event has happened. It is important to know about events when it happens in order to be emotionally and physically prepared to act if need to. Furthermore, by watching the news on the television, it increases the intelligence levels of Americans by allowing them to be knowledgeable in reference to what is actually happening within the country and events that could potentially be a threat to the country that is happening any other areas of the world. Therefore, the news is a vital part of television in this country because of the information that is given from each news provider, helping Americans to remain knowledgeable and further enhance the intelligence levels in the range of
