The Negative Effects Of Stereotyping

In today’s society, we all have suffered from altered or oversimplified images or ideas. Whenever we are in a grocery store or a classroom, we cannot help but judge someone without knowing them. We criticize based off of what we see and know; that is what stereotyping is. Stereotype is a belief, opinion, or idea about a certain group or type of individual. The cause of stereotyping is ignorance and the negative effect is social awkwardness on the individual and racial profiling on groups of people. Ignorance is a huge factor that causes stereotyping. With that being said ignorance is unaware knowledge or information.What influences ignorance is irrational thinking. Irrational thinking typically happens in the mind of someone that is experiencing a feeling of resentment and distasteful thoughts. Such as, like Donald Trump speech saying Latinos are criminals, rapist, and killers. Explaining, that his assumption of all Latinos are this way because of all the situations happening in Mexico. Social awkwardness is inflicted by being afraid of socially interacting with someone due to some factor of rejection or personal choice. This limitation is sometimes cause by stereotype. Majority of the time it happens based on the experience in their social life or environment. For example, in Queen Latifah’s article, “Who You Callin’ a Bitch?”, explaining that in her life when she was younger, “ a kid around my way called me a tomboy, I went home crying to my mother”. Expressing that she got judge at an early age just because of her athleticism. With that being said, like in her experience she was effected emotionally. Likewise, an individual can be effect by stereotypic criticism and effect their emotional state. This makes the individual separate themselves from society so they won’t get judge or hurt by others and typically leads to depression, emotional distress, and even
