Violence is shown through cartoons and TV shows which seem harmless to teens but has a major impact on the young minds of children. Children are known to use imitation which is “used to describe a recognizable match between an observer and a model’s behavior” (McGuigan 01). The term used for imitation in children is known as “the modeling effect which occurs when children reenact what they see on TV” (Block 91). The violent material that is viewed by children on television, is then seen as a positive act because someone else was seen performing the action. Children then demonstrate the action over, and over which causes a change from good behavior to aggressive behavior. Research explains that “age range in children play a role in how the media [television] influences the development of the mind”(Espinosa 157). Teenagers can relate more to social media than children because of the use of cell phones, which may include social media apps. Social media apps can be very entertaining but it has its negative effect that impact young teens such “improper use of technology, lack of privacy, sharing too much information, or posting false information about others or themselves” (O’Keeffe 05) Most social media sites have age limits that start at a minimum of 13 years old. The Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act is a set policy that “prohibits websites from collecting information on children younger than 13 without parental permission” (O’Keeffe 03). The problem with this policy is that children can easily lie about their age just to set up a social media account. Also the website that is prohibiting certain age groups, contains inappropriate content that is not meant to be viewed by children of certain ages.
