In every generation, there are things that become commonplace. These things are normally practiced by the virtually everybody in that generation. They might be fashion trends, sport, viewing of certain entertainment materials, or even usage of electronic gadgets like in the case in this article where Twenge talks about the usage of Smartphone by millennial.
Twenge drives points home by describing the way the current generation has been lost in usage of Smartphone. He gives an example of a thirteen year old girl, Athena, who is so much addicted to phones. In fact, her love for Smartphone is so deep that she says that her current generation likes Smartphone more than they like real people. He sees this as strange since during his teenage days children would only use landlines that were in their homes.
There are several cons that are associated with Smartphone according to him. A major one is that Smartphone reduces the capacity of one to think. Commonly, the attributes that come to characterize an age show up constantly, and along a range. Convictions and practices that were at that point rising just keep on doing so. According to him, the great recession of 2008 affected the current generation who sought solace in Smartphone.

In his view, it clearly shows that Smartphone have destroyed lives of teenagers. However, I feel that he would have driven home his point in a better way by not comparing the current generation with the previous generation since in the hitherto generation, there were no Smartphone.
