We all spend too much time doing something; sometimes playing Minecraft or tweeting about a failed relationship and how much ice cream is being eaten. Another thing we might be doing too much of is eating or being a workaholic. If we spend too much doing those things, more than likely it is an addiction. Those aren’t normally considered one, but drug abuse, alcohol abuse, and gambling are. All of those combined aren’t nearly as harmful on yourself, others, and your society. One of the weirdest things that we have seen as a society is the diminish of talking to people face to face, in favor of communicating with them through their cell phones and not wanting any emotional subtext to come through. There was a study done about pheromones and gypsy moths; scientists blasted the moth environment with female pheromones and the males were unable to find the female, since it seemed to be coming from all over the place (Hilton 1). Pornography changes the brain to where the dopamine receptors on the brain is needing “stronger and stronger stimuli” (Hilton 1). From the typical straight couple to the sketchier searches (incest, pedophila, BDSM) is the process for most pornography viewers, since they need that “high” to live. That’s why alcoholism, foodies, and meth-heads are so common, stress eats away at them and they don’t know how else to get away from the world. Even though, moderation may be the best for overall health, it is not the case with pornography. Pamela Paul, author of Pornified, “describes one person who decided to limit his pornography use, not from a moralist or guilt-based perspective, but out of a desire to again experience pleasure in actual physical relationships with women” (qtd. in Hilton 4). PornHub, the biggest industry for pornography recently put out a graph about their most popular searches by state (Figure 1). How many of these users have been looking at porn for a couple of months, even years? The terms that PornHub has used is a general term and doesn’t reflect precisely what type of porn that a user is watching. There could be more violent searches just happening to be with those searches, but it’s the term that interconnects
