We listen to pop music everywhere we go. Even when we drive, we listen to the radio we hear it in the shopping malls, and at times, we even put popular music as our cell phone ringtones. Even so, popular music has revolved around us in our everyday lives, and almost every pop song released on the radio gets big hits. Why is popular music gaining so much attention? It seems as if popular music is the norm in our society today because everyone listens to popular music. However, what we should really focus on is that pop music should not be considered that way. For instance, if we switch the question around, if the songs that are playing on the radio now were not popular, would we really have taken notice of them? This question arises as I ponder

Firstly, the lyrics are a bad influence on young adults. Often lyrics used in popular music consist of foul language, and this promotes the idea that using foul language is appropriate and acceptable in popular music. As popular music contributes to a big part of our society today, nonetheless, we often hear swear words in music, makes the illusions that it seems okay to integrate swear words in songs. According to billboard, one of the top hits consists of Big Sean’s “I Don’t Fuck With You,” (Billboard, 2015) and the lyrics in this song states, “I don’t fuck with you. You little stupid ass bitch, I ain’t fuckin’ with you” (Metrolyrics, 2015). Throughout the whole song, it continues with paragraphs of the same lines, thus expressing in such an ugly manner to show the feelings of oneself. This song is one of the top hits in 2015, many consumers, including young adults, have most definitely heard of this song. Since popular music is played everywhere, and that many are likely to sing along with the songs, having foul language in songs can make consumers, especially young adults, to be able to listen to these songs all the time. This can create a bad influence as it creates in a sense that foul words are nothing but just lyrics. In “Handbook of Adolescent Psychology,” it states that media emerge [is] powerful sources of information for adolescents who are self-socializing to the adult world” because they put most of their time on either the Internet or cell phone (Lerner & Steinber, 2004, p. 494). As adolescents put most of their time in media platforms, they can be easily affected with information that is exposed through the Internet. Internet is the one of the main mediums to display the music videos and lyrics, and by this, it triggers an even greater risk for adolescents to learn bad behaviors. In other words, because it is stated that there is a heavy use in Internet consumption, it increases the chances of how adolescents can engage in bad behaviors due to constant exposures of bad influences in music videos and lyrics.
