People tend to be violent at times. The question is, does it have to do with what they are subjected to in the media? Some research states yes, while others declare no. It is all a matter of how you look at it. Does watching violence make a child more likely to become a criminal when they grow up? According to some research, the answer is yes. But why do they think that? Everyone has seen violence at some point. Does that mean we are all aggressive people because of it? No, it does not. Many people who witness violence in the media don’t have aggression issues. It’s all about how you perceive the violence and what you let yourself believe to be true. Media violence has no effect on the aggression levels in most adolescents.

Not very many adolescents are at a risk of increased aggression. The ones who are would be the ones who don’t have parent and or peer support that can help protect them from negative behaviors. Most research is lacking the direct link that ties violent media to violence in youth. “Analyses of school shooting incidents from the U.S. Secret Service and the Federal Bureau of Investigation National Center for the Analysis of Violent Crime do not support a link between violent games and real world attacks” ( Most of the violence that happens is caused by a person, or people, who are mentally unstable and not because they played a violent video game or watched something violent. Even though there isn’t much research to back it up, people should still be wary of risks. There is a greater risk to those who already have a violent behavior. If a child is impulsive and or aggressive, it’s a good idea to keep track of what they watch and play. Also how it affects them. For some, it makes them even more aggressive and they could end up hurting themselves and or someone else. Sometimes, in young children and kids who are easily frightened, the shows, movies, and games can cause nightmares. Some children have the chance of becoming numb and void to the pain and suffering. Sometimes, they even believe that because everything in shows are resolved through violence, that is how everything has to be resolved. When they witness violence, that is not dumbed down in a cartoon, kids can often become fearful of the world and even have an increase in nightmares. “The typical American child will view more than 200,000 acts of violence, including more than 16,000 murders before age 18” (Beresin). As stated, children are exposed to many violent acts in the span of a short amount of time.
