Communication through social media has a negative influence on the self-image of youngsters between 15-25 years old.
Social networks have become very popular over the years. Young people between 15 and 25 years old frequently use social media. They can communicate through social media with people from all over the world. Moreover, they consider social media as an innocent resource for connecting with their companions. Social media focus primarily on the appearance. Youngsters compare themselves to the prevailing ideals of beauty. The thigh gap, for example, is a space between the upper legs that most people do not have. This leads to body dissatisfaction . What many young people do not known, is that this ideal image is unrealistic. Research shows that almost half of the messages or pictures that are posted on social media are edited. The result is an edited reality and more uncertainty among youth .
Social media increase depressions
Youngsters unconsciously compare themselves to others. Normally, we compare ourselves to people that are similar to ourselves, but on social media there is an ideal image. So, we are not comparing ourselves to a realistic image. This results in a lot of youngsters feeling less happy, which creates unnecessary negativity among them . Moreover, a study showed that youngsters who are using social media a lot are more likely to develop a depression compared those who make little use of social media .
