The large increase of workers that began to live in the city all needed sturdy establishments to live in while they were not working in the factories or shops. Some foundations even allowed boarding for young men and women in exchange for work. A textile worker sleeping with bed and board stated in a letter to her father that “I have a good boarding place, have enough to eat… I think the factory is the best place for me if any girl wants employment” (Document 1). Often the work placed on a young girl’s shoulders was very difficult and painstaking, so to hear a comment such as this in work area very down and upsetting show that there is some positive outcome of the movement. She was placed into a safe and secure environment that she expressed she enjoyed. The houses many people lived in however were very cramped and confined in the areas that were given to the workers. Some even had to share up to five to a bed. (They did nonetheless have solid and stable brick houses that would protect them much more than with the houses of wood or out on the streets.) (Document 6). The children living in the houses while their parents were away would reside in safety or would go to school to learn if they could afford it.
