The Negative Effects Of Eating School Lunches

Great Essays
There are over 25 million adolescents in America according to NCCP. This means there are millions of students daily relying on the meals provided by schools. There are kids who don 't know their vegetables because they are not provided at home or school. When I was in elementary and middle school I received school lunches daily. There were absolutely no vegetables or fruits provided other than the occasional grapes or small apple. Children will never know how to eat healthy, unless they are provided with healthy food options. Luckily, my mother cooked healthy meals for dinner every night. I grew up around healthy food at home so as I grew older I began to pack healthy food to school. This did not stop me from witnessing the extremely processed …show more content…
In Jamie Oliver’s Ted Talks he speaks about the amount of sugar in one small carton of school provided milk. He states in one day a student drinking milk would have consumed eight tablespoons of sugar. That is three and a half cups of sugar a week, only from school milk. This is such a staggering fact and if you think about it this is such a little detail people do not think of when eating school lunches. This shows that something as little as milk can reap such a huge negative impact to your everyday diet. This is just one example of the unhealthy school provided lunches. All the food provided is fast food such as pizza, small burgers, hot dogs, nuggets, etc. This food is not only unhealthy, but also highly processed, high in fat and sodium, and fast food. AI Art Institutes states, only $2.68 are what schools are given to cover the cost of one school lunch. This money will not only cover the cost of the meal, but also labor, facility, and structural costs. The price of the meals truly show the quality of the food and the size of the meal. If students are shown unhealthy food that is what they will begin to crave. Soon it is what the students will eat not only in school but also at home. If the children are do not have healthy food at home they will not know what healthy food is at

The Chicago Public School system (CPS) is like a second home for many students. Many of the students who attend these schools are usually from low income and middle class families. Unfortunately sometimes the meals that these kids receive at school are the only meals they get during the day. During the 2011-2012 school year the Chicago Public School system fed over 400,000 students more than 900,000 meals. These students have the option to receive breakfast and/or lunch during the school day. According to the CPS website, over eighty-percent of families are categorized as being low income. When families are low income, they can apply for free or reduced priced lunches. The regular price of breakfast and lunch is $2.50 per school day, which…

School lunches have become a leading problem in many american schools.”School districts are responsible for feeding hundreds of thousands of students every day, but sometimes the cafeterias miss the mark.“(nbcdfw 2018). The food is so low quality that it doesn’t give students the energy to power them throughout the school day. We need to change the food we serve at school to help out our students and to raise our standards of our school breakfast and lunches. The new food must be healthy and provide enough protein to last throughout the day. Along with this food being good for you we also need to make sure it is something kids actually want to eat. I know improving school lunches will help students health to improve, help kids to focus more in class, and encourage kids to eat healthier at home.…

The quality of school lunches has been a debated topic throughout this past decade. While some are advocating for healthier lunch options for students, others would prefer that lunch options stay fairly the same to offer a more diverse selection of foods. The opinion article “Healthy School Lunches Under Attack: Our View” written in 2015 by USA Today is a prime example of those in favor of healthier school lunches, and on the opposing side, “Provide Flexibility in the Lunchroom: Opposing View” written by the president of the School Nutrition Association Jean Ronnei in 2015, is an article discussing the possibility of school lunch mandates going too far. The articles provide interesting points on both sides of the argument, however, after reading both articles…

When picturing school lunches, many people may think of greasy and oily food that is unappealing and unhealthy. Is this a reality, or just a fiction? There is large controversy over whether this view should be altered or not. About 19,000 schools in the United States currently serve fast food in their cafeteria. Since this food is cheaper to make, many schools may find it a better option than healthier lunches. People on the other side of the debate, however, may argue that schools should serve healthy lunches since they are crucial to reduce obesity. Additionally, students may feel better after eating healthy since there is a link between how someone eats and how he or she feels. Schools in the United States of America should serve healthier lunches to lower childhood obesity, promote local agriculture and small businesses, and increase school profits.…

Everyone has experienced a bad lunch. Lunches can be unhealthy, but that is a person’s decision. Students in public schools are sometimes forced to eat the lunch in the school cafeteria due to financial reasons, but public school lunches aren’t considered the healthiest. Arkansas has been known to serve unhealthy school lunches. Arkansas public school students aren’t receiving healthy lunches because public schools don’t follow the federal guidelines; therefore, it is important that these institutions provide healthier lunches to promote health and wellness for this population.…

Schools consider ketchup a vegetable, sell soda and candy in vending machines, and give students access to baked sugar good. As long as calories define energy and to lose weight, there needs to be a calorie deficit, it is important to learn how to control how much is taken in and out. While the statistics and testimonials provided in the film were not accurate, the images they displayed were effective and are in fact a glimpse of reality for many adolescents in the public school system. Children are in fact influenced by their surroundings, which includes school. If school is responsible for giving students a proper education, this should extend into health and nutrition. This includes refining cafeteria offerings, limiting processed food, and providing an in-depth discussion on…

Those 2 million kids are eating unhealthy junk that will do more damage to their body than the good. Within the school districts During the 2012–2013 school year, more than 30 million students participated in the National School Lunch Program (NSLP), according to a U.S. Government Accountability Office report. Within the united states 2 million are receiving free lunches, 5 million are receiving reduced-price lunches (children from families with incomes between 130 percent and 185 percent of the poverty level are eligible), and 7 million pay full price (school districts set their own prices for paid meals). In total this is 14 million people eating the same thing. This data points toward one of the major issues with school lunches in America. If 19.2 million students are receiving free lunches due to their socioeconomic status, school lunch could be their only opportunity for a nutritious meal each day. Why are you going to have these kids who only eat once a day eat the unhealthy meat products. Back to what Berry was saying, we need to recognize what we are eating. Let's think a step ahead of that, what if we do recognize what we are eating but we have no choice…

At school, children generally consume as many as half of their daily calories. With millions participating in the National School Lunch Program and in the National School Breakfast Program, good nutrition is very important. She works with the private sector and the non-profit community to take steps to provide healthy foods in schools. School food suppliers are taking important steps to help meet the U.S. goals. Major school suppliers are working together to meet the recommendations within five years to reduce the amount of sugar, fat, and salt in school meals. The suppliers are also going to increase whole grains and double the amount of produce they use within ten years. The School Nutrition Association (SNA) has also joined the Let’s Move Campaign. They are working towards increasing awareness about childhood obesity. The Administration is ensuring that schools have the proper resources to make changes including training the work staff and upgrading the equipment. I think this source is very credible for my topic because it’s showing how America is taking a stand against bad foods and eating habits in schools. It shows how SNA is working hard to make sure schools have all the resources to make sure children receive the proper foods. Many school suppliers…

According to the video, most schools require students to take at least on fruit or vegetable. Many might argue that the students can throw them away bit with the right amount of choices and supervision the rates of obesity will go down. The graph shows that 18.4% of kids in the U.S are obese. 18.4% is a huge number and should not be ignored. This shows that students eat fatty things in school because students eat at school five out of seven days and most parents don’t supervise what their child eats. Therefore, if school provide lunches the rate will go down. Needless to say when students have the right to choose what they eat they don’t really make the smartest…

Schools are very good at buying whole foods in boxes, bags, and cans. But they are not so good at making things from scratch. “The majority of school kitchens in New York and elsewhere don't cook from scratch; they reheat prepared foods. “When I came every piece of chicken and fish was breaded, or fried, or has some coating on it,” he says.”(Spake, 4). The food that teens and children are served every day is bought from a factory and shipped to the school. What goes on in that factory is a mystery to most. How the food is made and breaded is a good question but all the cafeteria workers know is that it is easy to put in the oven. More information should be provided on where the food that students eat at school comes from. Another problem for teens and kids is the time crunch. Most kids don't eat lunch because they do not have time to. There is homework to be completed, places to be, things to be done. Some kids spend their lunch periods in the library studying or in an extra study hall. Lunch is a necessity for teens and children in school. They need that food to keep their brains functioning properly and their energy levels high. Vending machines have become very popular in schools. Most of the time, they are a substitute for a real lunch. “Soda machines are an easy way to distract kids from eating healthy meals,” says Michael Leiding, RD, LDN clinical research…

A morning edition of national public radio, titled, “Lunch Ladies Want Healthy Hunger-Free Kids Act to Lighten Up” featured Jean Ronnie, president of the School Nutrition Association. I chose this because Ronnie works directly with schools, lunch ladies and makes a lot of the recipes for school lunch herself. Ronnie described one of the students favorite meals, “Fresh roasted chicken, cornbread that 's homemade, apple kohlrabi slaw and strawberries” that can no longer be served because of the sodium content. This rule among many other restricts snack and meal options for schools and students. I personally love having healthier options to choose from in the vending machines. While my brother feels like healthy eating is being shoved down his throat and sometimes resorts to bringing food from home to school. As of last year, one million students stopped buying school lunch and this number of students seems to be increasing. As food costs and labor costs rise, the schools are losing money on the cafeteria programs, and consequently have to dip into the general fund, the fund that supports classrooms. As the standards for school lunches increase, so do the costs and consequently the classroom budget. By dipping into funds for classrooms, schools are forced to put more emphasis on nutrition than in academic resources. The emphasis can be viewed both positively, and negatively. After all, proper nutrition is a basic human need and the better fulfilled it is, the stronger the foundation for other endeavors is. On the other hand, the reduction of resources from the classroom can affect the learning process itself. The only thing that is clear is that menu options are being reduced and schools have to adjust…

Certain kids have different experiences with their school’s lunches, but it’s safe to assume that the majority of children do not enjoy them one bit. At a school in LA, one child says “The healthier it gets the more disgusting it is” which is just another reason why healthy school lunches are not a good idea. Some children at the school can barely describe what “it” is. Kids want to eat what tastes good, not what tastes like garbage, no matter how good it is for them. It’s not just the taste though; it’s the serving size as well. One student says “Usually we go to the student store and I'll buy a bag of Cheetos...or like chips, sometimes a Gatorade, yeah" when asked what they will do when the school lunch doesn’t fill them up enough. This is a problem that is hard to deal with, because having bags of snacks that students can munch on sort of goes back on the whole idea of “healthy lunches” and has the student spending money on top of their bought lunch just to get filled up for the rest of the day. Giving students a healthy option is ideal, but having them eat something that tastes bad and won’t even fill them up doesn’t seem right.…
