Teenagers are faced with many obstacles that have a negative impact. Of these obstacles the most prominent is cyber-bullying. Cyber-bullying differs from traditional bullying in some ways’, however, bullying is still bullying. Teenagers are attacked by cyber-bullies daily. This particular type of bullying has many sources, but occurs most frequently over social networking sites. Being a victim of cyber-bullying can lead to a variety health problems, and if severe enough, can result in suicide. Cyber-bullying needs to be punished. Furthermore, stronger laws need to be made in order to protect people from this. In the twenty-first century there has been an increase of technology. This technological increase is linked with bullying in some ways. Technology is the source of all cyber-bullying, and with how technologically advanced this generation is, bullying is made easier with the use of anonymity. It is very easy to make fake accounts online; therefore anonymity can be used as a disguise to attack victims. Because anonymous comments and post are not directly linked to bullies, they can be as brutal as they want without any consequences (Traditional Bullying, 2016). Traditional bullying differs from cyber-bullying because cyber-bullying can happen anytime anywhere. Social media and texting allows bullying to happen far beyond the traditional school yard. The internet allows bullies to torture a victim in front of many people over a variety of social sites. Some signs of depression are long lasting sadness/ irritability, loss of interest in enjoyable activities, seclusion, changed sleeping cycles, and change in eating. Also, fatigue, inability to focus, aches without physical cause, thinking of death, and giving away prized possessions (Bullying Statistics, 2016) (Should Cyberbullying, 2016). As stated above cyber-bullying causes many health problems. Victims of bullying and bullies are both more likely to suffer from depression than those not involved in bullying. This is long lasting, people bullied as children are more likely to suffer from depression than those not bullied as children (Bullying Statistics, 2016). Depression drives a person to do harmful things to themselves which hurts them and others around them. Tyler Clementi was eighteen when he committed suicide due to cyber bullying. Tyler’s roommate and peer recorded an intimate encounter with another man and streamed it onto the internet.
