The negative effects of Childhood Obesity

One of the major social issues that are affecting the world today, is the obesity found in children. Just in America alone, has one of the highest rates of childhood obesity in the world. Since 2012 “The percentage of children aged 6-11 years in the United States who were obese increased from 7% in 1980 to nearly 18% in 2012. Similarly, the percentage of adolescent aged 12-19 years who were obese increased from 5% to nearly 21% over the same period.” (https://www.cdc.gov/healthyschools/obesity/facts.htm) This is a very significant change in statistics and has increased even higher since 2012, unable to collect the proper statistics, we can predict that the percentage is mid to late 20s for both age brackets. So the question on everyone’s mind is why? Why do kids let themselves become obese? And why do parents let their kids get overweight? With childhood obesity becoming a growing problem in America, through more exercise, healthier food choices and more discipline from children 's parents, kids in America can become healthier and fitter, ultimately leading to a longer-lasting life.

There are many things that could help reduce childhood obesity in America. Because unhealthy food cost less than healthy food, parents with lower incomes are forced to buy what is cheaper, rather than what is healthier. This is something that can be easily changed by a decision from the parents, yes healthier food costs more, but it is worth it. This is…
