Bullies in the Workplace Worldwide bullying in the workplace is very common today. Research by (Namie, Christensen, and Phillips, 2014) states, “In our 2014 National Survey workplace bullying was defined as repeated mistreatment; abusive conduct that is: threatening, humiliating, or intimidating, work sabotage, or verbal abuse”. Bullying in the workplace can manifest as extortion and blackmail toward the victim. Some employees have experienced violence in the workplace by being physically attacked by other employees. There is some key differences between workplace bullying and harassment. According to Gould (2016), “Bullying costs businesses more than $200 billion a year due to decreased productivity, increased absenteeism, and high turnover”. Some victims are not alert to the fact that they are being bullied. Businesses may obtain astronomical fines, enormous legal costs, and elevated insurance premiums because of the negative effects of workplace bullying. Significantly, the victims of workplace bullying will have problems with attendance, productivity, morale, and efficiency. In reality, verbal abuse is considered a form of workplace bullying. A workplace bully that feels the necessity to control a co-worker will use verbal abuse and threatening language. Many times, bullies will choose a time or location when no one else is around. They are usually vulgar and unbearable. They love to make others fearful of them. Second, there is another type that enjoys having power over people. This type will not permit the victim to have access to the utensils they need to be successful at work. Many abusive managers descend into this category, because they are able to use their authority to intimidate people. Thirdly, there is a workplace bully that loves to constantly criticize the victim and it will not matter how well the victim executes his work. This type can go to the extreme and create false evidence to make the victim get in trouble or fired. Additionally, there is a bully type that is two-faced. This type will pretend that they are your friend, but when you are not around they will do their best to destroy your character. The two-faced type of bully will even attempt to steal the glory for your labor. Furthermore, there is another type of bully who is an attention seeker. They appear to be benevolent to their coworkers and pursue to become well-liked by their superiors. On the other hand, when they do not receive the desired attention they will become your worst adversary. They seek to obtain personal information from their peers in order to have ammunition to use against them.
